In short

Agent checkout went from one in-chat button in ChatGPT (September 2025) to competing protocols, card-network rules and standards bodies. ChatGPT stepped back from checkout in March 2026, Google and Microsoft standardised on UCP, and Visa wrote agent duties into its rules in April 2026.
