Tempo

In short

Tempo is a payments-focused blockchain incubated by Stripe, and it co-wrote the Machine Payments Protocol with Stripe, in which an API answers with HTTP 402 and asks to be paid. Access keys give each agent a spending limit and an expiry, and sub-cent charges are supported. For cards, MPP depends on Stripe, since Tempo itself takes no card payments.

What it does not do

  • Tempo does not process card payments itself; card acceptance in MPP runs through Stripe.
  • Tempo notes that some collection or custody providers process only whole cents, so sub-cent pricing depends on the funding provider.
