x402 Foundation
In short
The x402 Foundation became operational on 14 July 2026, when the transfer of Coinbase's x402 protocol, an HTTP 402 payment standard, to the Linux Foundation was complete. No single company is to control it, since the Linux Foundation promises vendor neutrality. Adyen's chief technology officer spoke at the launch about merchants transacting on their own terms. It runs no facilitator.
